2008 Charities

The tentative list of charities for the 2008 Elk Toss has been determined. We may add another one or two, but for now the list is as follows:

• Central Susquehanna Opportunities
• Centre County Youth Services Bureau
• Columbia County Volunteers in Medicine (added 1/21/08)
• Montour County Rec Authority (to assist with development of canal path)
• Montour County Summer Concert Series

Preliminary Elk Toss Schedule

Here's the preliminary schedule for the 2008 Elk Toss, Charity Auction, and Winter Festival:

Saturday February 16, 2008

8:00 am - Pappas Restaurant for Annual ScrappleFest

9:00 am - Salvation Army Shopping Trip

10:00 am - Jerseytown Tavern in Jerseytown Jerseytown - Burger Eat-Off, Presentation of Certificate of Appreciation

11:30 am - Arrive at Wagner Farm - Scrap Iron Toss, Salad Toss, Ice Roping, Sled-Dog Race, Chicken Race, Block Shoot, Beard Contest, etc.
Charity Auction and live music will be held between each event
Annual meeting and officers reports
Pot luck style food

4:00 pm - ELK TOSS followed by more competitions and auction

7:00 pm - Leave Wagner Farm and head to downtown Danville

8:00 pm - Tour of Danville begins at Pine Barn Inn bar, continue to fine establishments such as Mulberry's, BJ's, American Legion, LT Evans, etc.

10:00 pm - Music by Slimfit and Van Wagner, and magic by Fred Iobst at the Pub

Late - Cheese Cosmos at Danville Sub Shop

Food Bank Donations

We're once again collecting non-perishable food items for the Danville-Riverside Food Bank. Here are some suggestions as to items to bring to donate.

• Raisins or other dried fruit
• Laundry soap, bath/hand soap
• Canned beef stew and/or chili
• Canned meat such as Spam or chicken
• Jello or pudding, including diet varieties
• Canned pasta (spaghetti, ravioli, etc.)
• Instant mashed potatoes
• Coffee, Tea and Hot Chocolate
• Cooking oil
• Mayonnaise/Salad Dressing
• Dry cereal and oatmeal
• Baking and pancake mixes
• Dry macaroni or noodles
• Tomato products such as paste, diced, stewed, crushed
• Sugar and sugar supplements

This list was edited from one on the State College Area Food Bank website. Their list said they had sufficient supplies of soup and canned tuna. The Danville-Riverside Food Bank is probably in the same situation.

We're looking into whether the Danville-Riverside Food Bank accepts gift cards.

Once again, if you can bring more donated food than the combined total of the DGS Presidents, we'll buy beer for you all day.

50 Days Until 2008 Elk Toss

The Elk Toss is coming soon. Can you hear the far off sound of an elk bugle?

You can prepare for the event by doing the following:

• Gather items to donate to the charity auction
• Practice Elk Tossing (large goats are a suitable for practice if an elk is not available)
• Make arrangements if you plan to stay in Danville overnight. We recommend the Pine Barn Inn (800-627-2776, www.pinebarninn.com). Note that we found the online rates were $20 higher than reservations over the phone.
• Collect non-perishable food items to donate to the Danville-Riverside Food Bank
• Obtain Lederhosen if you don't have them already
• Become fluent in PA Dutch and/or German

A few other items to note:

• Like last year, Slimfit will play at the Pub II at 10pm after the Elk Toss.
• A detailed schedule of the weekend's events will be posted here soon.

No Elk for 2008?

Due to concerns about Chronic Wasting Disease in elk, the DGS Elk Handler and 74 time Elk Toss Champion Franz Klingermann is looking into whether we should not toss an elk this year. He has made contact with a Montour County goat farmer and it looks like we could get a large goat if necessary.

2008 Elk Toss Date

It's been a while since a posting from the DGS. We're still here, and we're in the process of planning another Elk Toss. It will be held on February 16, 2008, in and around Danville, as always.

Up-to-date information regarding the event, including the schedule, will be posted here when it is ready. Other information will be posted on the DGS website.

A few items from last year - we still do not know of the whereabouts of the Elk Toss Trophy. If you took it last year, please return it. We won't ask any questions.

The 2007 Elk Toss resulted in $1550 being donated to several charities and a grocery cart or two of food to the local food bank. The charities were as follows:
Good Samaritan Fund: $300
Northcentral PA Conservancy: $300
Centre Wildlife Care: $400
Montour Summer Concert Series: $150
Danville family displaced by fire: $300
Todd Summer's Trip to Germany: $100*

*As a condition of this donation, Todd was supposed to provide a full report of his activities while in Germany. We expect to see this prior to the 2008 Elk Toss or we will ask for our money back.

Where is the Elk Toss Trophy?

As of Sunday night, the Elk Toss trophy was not in the possession of the winner, Mike Wilkinson. If you have the Elk Toss Trophy, please email us and let us know so we can get it to Mike.

2007 Elk Toss Charities

We raised a little over $1500 this year. This is less than last year, but still very impressive considering the weather caused a few people not to be able to attend. The total amount raised is the second highest in DGS Elk Toss history.

We will split the money between these charities (and maybe more):
Good Samaritan Mission of Danville
Centre Wildlife Care
Northcentral Pennsylvania Conservancy
Montour County Summer Concert Series

The final number will be posted here as soon as we get it and determine how much will go to each charity.
