Competitors throw down at Elk toss

Mooresburg — For the 15th year in a row, the Danville German Society and the Elk Toss celebrated their "75th Year Anniversary" Saturday by raising $2,900 the most in the history of the event.

The all-day festival, held at the Van Wagner farm near Mooresburg, began at 11:30 a.m. and included the Elk tossing and an auction to benefit nonprofit organizations.

Elk bugling, a scrap iron toss, a salad toss, a block shoot, a beard contest and a skateboard/scooter competition for kids, also filled the action packed day, according to organizer Karl Shellenberger.

The tossing, along with the other events and the auction, are to benefit nonprofit organizations, Shellenberger said.

Auction proceeds went to The Gate House shelter for the homeless in Danville, Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania and the Catholic Worker House of Lancaster.

Van Wagner, of Danville, who is also well recognized by Valley residents for his musical talents, and Shellenberger have been involved with the organization since 1999, Shellenberger said.

The duo participated in their first Elk Toss in 2001.

"The 2001 Elk Toss event was the first attempt at making it into a fundraiser," Shellenberger said.

"Since that time, we have donated a total of just less than $25,000. That only includes financial donations. We have also donated non-perishable food to the Danville-Riverside Food Bank for the past 12 years."

The group has also collected diapers for the Danville Area Diaper Bank, Shellenberger said.

Since 2001, the group has donated money or materials to the following organizations: Danville SPCA, Bloomsburg Women’s Center, Priestly-Forsyth Memorial Library in Northumberland, Thomas Beaver Free Library, in Danville, Danville-Riverside Food Bank, Sidler Hill Cemetery Revitalization Project, ClearWater Conservancy in Centre County, Animal Resource Center of Bloomsburg, Mooresburg Bicentennial, Danville Mining and Manufacturing Museum, Montour County Summer Concert Series, Heart-to-Hand Ministries of Danville, Good Samaritan Fund of Danville, Northcentral PA Conservancy, Centre Wildlife Care of State College, Central Susquehanna Opportunities, Centre County Youth Services Bureau, Columbia County Volunteers in Medicine, Team in Training, Montour County Rec Authority, Centre County Women’s Resource Center, Milagro House in Lancaster, The Daily Item Needy Family Fund, Deb’s House in Lancaster, Mount Nittany Conservancy in Centre County, Centre Grounds in State College, State College Area Food Bank, Compeer Lancaster, Ronald McDonald House of Danville, Liberty Recycling Center, SOS Children’s Villages, AGAPE in Bloomsburg, Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania in State College, Church World Service in Lancaster, Children Deserve a Chance Foundation in Lancaster, HOPE Fund of Penns Valley in Centre Hall, Danville Area Diaper Bank, Lancaster County Conservancy Urban Greening Program, Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center in Lancaster, and the Jared Box Project from Port Matilda.

After the event, Van Wagner, the Brothers McMonagle and Fred Iobst performed at Old Forge Brewing Co., on Mill Street.
